Side Sattle

Sawadeeka (Hello) from Thailand.

Thailand has been wonderful. Although we feel as if we are constantly in a steam bath, the food, sights, and people are well worth the shvitzing (that's sweating for those of you who don't speak yiddish). We arrived two days ago and took an overnight bus from Bangkok to the South to a town called Krabi. Krabi does not boast of gorgeous beaches like many of the neighboring towns, but it has been a wonderful jumping off point. Like Thailand as a whole, Krabi seems to be an amalgamation of contradictions. Our nice hotel (only $13 per night) is situated next to a shanty house. We saw a Buddhist preist talking on his cell phone on our hike. While on the same hike, we watched a monkey licking an ice cream cone…he was licking evenly, so as not to have an imbalanced cone. Thailand does also live up to the images you might have in your head. When looking over the valley from our hike there were jagged mountains, fields of palm trees, and rain forrests filled with many interesting sounds.

We've spent our time in Krabi on a private boat tour of a fish farm and a cave filled with bats, climbing 1600 stair steps to a huge Buddha statue, and mostly eating our way through every outdoor market we can find (dinner total for two is about $2 US). Today we took a moped taxi from Krabi to the hike. Travis insisted that I sit in the middle so that he could make a sandwich out of me. I was instucted to hold onto the driver and Trav held on to the driver's shoulders. As we drove off all of the locals were giggling at our seatbelt system, as everyone seems to be able to stay on their mopeds without holding on… They even ride side sattle!

More to come…

Lots of love,

Amy and Travis
