First Two Weeks in New Zealand
Hello Everyone!
Well, sorry for the delays in blogginng. We've been here in New Zealand for two weeks and, apparently, have been too busy to sit down and write something to you.
Time here has been very nice. After flying in to Christchurch, we returned to the wonderful home of our friends Sam and Shane for a few days before embarking on our first "WWOOFing" experience. Willing Workers On Organic Farms is a program by which travelers trade 4-5 hours of work per day, usually done on an organic farm, for a place to sleep and food to eat. We thought it would be fun and were ready to be in one place for a bit after traveling for almost two months, so we gave Wwoofing a try...
Instead of a farm, we chose to work with a family that runs a neat chocolate business. We've been here a week and a half, and have had just about all of the fine chocolate we'll ever need. The location has also been ideal: Governor's Bay is a sweet little (little means one cafe, one pub, and a few houses) at the base of the Port hills and on the coast of a huge bay. It's absolutely gorgeous and an awesome place to train (have been going on GREAT road bike rides) and take in the scenery. We're told however, that the remainder of NZ makes this area look pretty plain, so in a few days we'll hit the road on a loop of the South Island for a month or more.
Needless to say, we're pretty stoked about a road trip across this place!
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving! We'll be celebrating with Sam and Shane, a few other Americans, and some Kiwis who'll get a good introduction to mashed potatoes, turkey, and the Lions on TV (if we can find the coverage on one of the three TV channels here).
Trav and Amy
Oh yeah...we got a car. As you can see from the photo, the Little Prince is a fine, white Toyotta Corolla of the diesel pursuasion. You probably recognized it as an '87 (year of the Pig in Korea, year of the best cars ever in Japan). Purchased from Aaron Prince for the price of NZ$800 (a bit over US$500), this fine stallion will carry us and our bikes, boat, and gear (which may or may not need to be unloaded while climbing hills) over the Southern Alps and beyond....
